In Memory of Carol Goldberg

Dear IWF/MA Members,

It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing of Carol Goldberg, one of the founding members of IWF/MA. Carol's impact on women professionals, particularly in Boston and beyond, was profound and far-reaching.

Carol was a true trailblazer during a pivotal time for women in the workforce. In the 1970s and 1980s, when many barriers to professional advancement still stood strong, Carol played a crucial role in breaking down those obstacles for women striving to rise through the ranks. Her unwavering commitment to empowering women helped shape the professional landscape, and her influence continues to be felt today.

Carol’s enthusiasm for promoting women was legendary among original IWF members, as she strategized ways to move all of us into positions of power. Much of her philosophy of working within established corporate and civic structures was contained in her book Members of the Club, co-authored with Dawn-Marie Driscoll while both were Visitors in Residence at The Bunting Institute at Harvard/Radcliffe. The book told the story of how many IWF members advanced and supported each other — a story that is true today.

"Carol Goldberg’s extraordinary talents, and her courage, forced open doors previously slammed shut for women. Once opened, she made sure those doors remained open - a continuing challenge - so that other women could follow. As I look back over my career, as I scroll through photographs and relive the earliest days of the Mass Women’s Forum, Carol is there at every juncture…supporting me, encouraging me, strategizing with me, holding my hand and pulling me forward. I am, we all are, the beneficiaries of her dedication to making our a more equal society.” - Chief Justice Margaret H. Marshall (ret.)

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Carol's family and all those who were fortunate enough to work with and be inspired by her.

Carol was my hero and role model as one of two extraordinary women (with Lois Silverman) on the Board of the Beth Israel Hospital when I was a new (and first) women executive at the Hospital. Her wise guidance, advice and encouragement I have carried with me for nearly 5 decades. Her wit, sense of humor and great smile made her a joy to be around. Thank you Carol for paving the way for all of us! Sandi Fenwick
